Contemporary Rome Tour
1930s architecture, city planning and history in the EUR district and Garbatella
- WITH
- Paolo | about the guide
Mussolini had ambitious plans for Rome in the 1930s. He wanted to build a modern district to house the 1942 World Trade Fair, which would revive the glory of the Roman Empire. The project, EUR (Esposizione Universale Roma), was interrupted by World War II and never fully completed. This tour will take you around this unfinished district whose design was inspired by a combination of Ancient Roman town planning and more modern elements such as Italian rationalism and its simplified neoclassic style. As you wander down the vast boulevards, past bold statues and across vast squares, your experienced local guide will tell you more about Mussolini, fascism and the construction of modern Italy. The second part of the tour will take you to Garbatella, a “garden city” built in 1920s and 30s for newly arrived rural migrants. You’ll explore the shared gardens, lively taverns and local shops in this bustling residential area in the southern district of Ostiense.

Originally from Rome, I was an archaeologist for more than ten years before deciding to set aside the dusty books and archives and work with people, using my skills to show Rome to the incoming visitors. I have always loved being in contact with people and this change of career makes me really happy. On the side, I have also been a cub scout leader for 5 years and I enjoy working with families, children and teenagers alike. One of my favorite moments is when I see children's eyes lighting up and when they ask interesting questions during my tours. I also love bringing my clients to local places to enjoy some food and drinks. It is always enjoyable to break the ice and get to know each other. My speciality as a guide is Ancient Rome but I also like to talk about the Baroque and Renaissance periods of the city.
