Ancient Roman Aqueducts Tour

Uncovering sophisticated aqueducts, underground waterways and beautiful fountains

WITH
Paolo | about the guide

Today, we take running water for granted. But, how did the Romans manage to provide each citizen with 70 gallons of water a day over 2 thousand years ago? This tour will reveal the amazing hydraulic engineering accomplishments made during the Roman era, which demonstrate the sophistication of this ancient empire. From 312 B.C. onwards, eleven main aqueducts and eight minor branches supplied incredible amounts of water for wealthy houses, 11 public bath houses, 900 pools, 1,300 fountains, 3 artificial lakes and 2 naumachie (basins used to perform naval battles). Largely destroyed by the Barbarians when the empire collapsed, the aqueducts, or traces of them, can still be found in the south-eastern outskirts of Rome and inside the city at Porta Maggiore and Trevi Fountain. During this tour, you will be taken around these ruins, including underground at the Trevi Fountain, by an experienced local guide to find out more about these incredible feats of engineering.

Originally from Rome, I was an archaeologist for more than ten years before deciding to set aside the dusty books and archives and work with people, using my skills to show Rome to the incoming visitors. I have always loved being in contact with people and this change of career makes me really happy. On the side, I have also been a cub scout leader for 5 years and I enjoy working with families, children and teenagers alike. One of my favorite moments is when I see children's eyes lighting up and when they ask interesting questions during my tours. I also love bringing my clients to local places to enjoy some food and drinks. It is always enjoyable to break the ice and get to know each other. My speciality as a guide is Ancient Rome but I also like to talk about the Baroque and Renaissance periods of the city.

Exceptional Tour of the Aqueducts with Paolo We recently had the pleasure of touring the aqueducts with Paolo, and it was an unforgettable experience. The tour was well planned, and Paolo ensured we visited all the key sites. He provided fascinating insights into the engineering of the ancient aqueducts, explaining how they were constructed and their importance to the communities they served. What truly left a lasting impression was Paolo's personalized approach. His genuine love for history and his willingness to share it with us, along with their patience in answering our questions and sharing lesser-known facts, made the tour feel uniquely tailored to our interests. Overall, Paolo provided an exceptional tour that exceeded our expectations. His expertise, enthusiasm, and excellent communication skills made this one of the best tours we have ever taken. We highly recommend Paolo to anyone interested in exploring the aqueducts or learning more about this fascinating part of history. Thank you, Paolo, for a remarkable and enlightening tour!

This tour was amazing!! Learning about ancient Roman engineering and how the aqueducts powered Rome's fountains (and still do!) was really interesting. It was also great to get outside of Rome's "tourist central" and see things the typical tourist doesn't get to experience. Ulisse (Paolo's colleague) did a fantastic job with this tour, even adjusting when needed due to a closure. I would highly recommend Unique Tours Factory and would book with them again on another trip. Grazie mille!!

Excellent tour! Paolo was very nice and give a tour for a larger group on request, and the group was extremely happy about the tour, it was perfect for them, and exceeded all expectations. They all said that Paolo was the best guide they ever had, and the tour was just overall perfect. Would highly recommend the tour to others!
