The Jewish Heritage in Provence
A half-day visit to the emblematic spots of the city
- WITH
- Laurent | about the guide
Marseille is home to the third largest Jewish community in Europe with a presence dating back to the Roman Empire and expanding in the Middle Ages.
During the time of the Inquisition, Jewish populations from Spain, Portugal and France sought papal protection in certain regions of Provence. World War II forced many Jews to flee Eastern and Western Europe who arrived in Marseille with the hope of taking a boat to the Americas. Massive roundups were held in the Panier and Opera districts.
After being picked up from your hotel or your cruise ship, you will visit the synagogue of Marseille and the Jewish neighborhood. After that, you will drive up to Notre Dame de la Garde for the view, and finally drive along the coast and see the Palais Longchamp and the Old City.

A native of Lille, I spent over 20 years in Paris before deciding to settle in Marseille, attracted by the climate and the charm of the Mediterranean. During my years in the capital, I was an actor but also an oenologist and restaurant owner, developing my passion and my skills in several renowned institutions. Since my arrival on the French Riviera, I specialized in tourism by offering tours combining wine, gastronomy and history, especially from Marseille, Aix en Provence and Cassis. I love to share my knowledge with people, being outside and exploring sites full of culture and history. I also sometimes offer mini wine courses and cooking courses in order to teach curious visitors how to combine wine and food. During my private tours, discover the culinary delights of the South of France between tapas, pastries and olive oil, as well as the most scenic places from Cassis to Arles via Les Baux de Provence.
