Curious to discover one of Catalonia’s best-kept Medieval fortresses? Keen to explore beautiful formations in 4,000 year-old salt mines? This private guided tour will whisk you away from Barcelona to the hillside town of Cardona, famous for its castle and salt mines. The medieval fortress showcases splendid gothic and Romanesque architecture and is one of the best examples of its kind in Spain. First built in 798 by Louis Pious grandson of Charlemagne, the castle played a key role in Catalan history. Accompanied by your knowledgeable guide, you’ll explore the castle’s bastions, towers, church and bunker. Next stop? The spectacular salt mines that took 40.000.000 years to create and were active from Roman times until the 1990s, when they were turned into the Cardona Salt Mountain Cultural Park. You will enter inside the mine tunnels to admire the unique salt formations and learn about the local geology.

ITINERARY
Your full-day guided tour will take you from Barcelona to the Catalan town of Cardona. Firstly, you’ll be taken around the Medieval castle to discover its towers, bastions and church. The second part of the tour will take you to the 4,000 year old salt mines in the Cardona Salt Mountain Cultural Park. You’ll go into the mine to admire the spectacular salt formations. Please note that Cardona Castle is closed on Mondays.
