Barcelona Gothic Quarter Tour
A half-day of gothic architecture, Roman walls and popular legends
- WITH
- Gregorio | about the guide
This tour is dedicated to one of Barcelona’s oldest and most fascinating areas, the gothic quarter. Prepare to be taken back in time as you wander through the narrow streets ruled over by the Aragon monarchs more than 600 years ago. The highlight of the gothic quarter is without doubt the cathedral, which you will be able to visit inside. During the tour, your guide will identify further emblematic examples of gothic architecture, including the two other Gothic churches in the quarter: Santa Maria del Mar and Santa Maria del Pi. Taking a stroll down the Carrer de Montcada, you will be able to take a closer look at the magnitude of several gothic palaces which now host the Picasso Museum. Afterwards you will visit the King's Square, from where you can admire the Royal Palace, the Lieutenant Palace and the "Gothic Palaces" (homes to the rich nobility in medieval times), which is now home to the History Museum (MUHBA) and the Archives of the Aragon Crown. At the edge of Cathedral Square lie the remains of Roman walls built to protect the first settlement of Barcelona more than 2,000 years ago. Becoming known as the Call district, in medieval times, a Jewish community gradually settled in this area. As you explore the old streets, you will find endless traces of this history including gargoyles and numerous popular legends. The tour also includes Sant Jaume square, which was renovated in 19th century to host the City Hall and Catalan government, making it a popular place for demonstrations today. And, if there is time, you will finish the tour with a gentle stroll along the Las Ramblas, the bustling thoroughfare leading down to the port.

Born in a small village in the middle of Spain, but raised in Barcelona, I have always been passionate about my beautiful city and its unique character; that's why I decided to go back to school to become an official tour guide after several years working for the Spanish administration in a boring office. As a tour guide, what I enjoy the most is meeting new people and creating links between people; because what makes the beauty and the interest of a city are the people; the ones who live there but also the ones who come and visit, who see the different aspects with their own eyes and always showing me a new way to see it. My specialty is to give visitors a real feeling and experience of how people live, think and act in this part of the world. I also enjoy sharing what Barcelona and Catalonia have to offer, so I always try to integrate and connect everything: what to see, to admire, the details, the history behind, the secret paths ect… Even though I have a complete knowledge of Barcelona and its different points of interests, one of my favorite theme is the architecture, which is a huge part of the city's culture.

Good morning Gregorio. We are now back in Texas after a wonderful holiday. It was so nice to spend the last week with my sister. Once again I would like to thank you for the time we spent together in Barcelona. Our two walking tours and lunch were enjoyed so much. I felt we saw and learnt quite a bit about your home city. I would like to return!!!
