Less than half an hour from Paris, Maisons-Laffitte and its immense park filled with wooded areas is a delight to discover on horseback. With routes adapted to riders of all abilities, the park and nearby Forest of Saint-Germain treat you to over 77km of wide, shady riding tracks. Within this former royal hunting estate, you may catch glimpses of squirrels, foxes and wild boar. Follow in the footsteps of the French kings as you gallop along the pathways on the look-out for traces of the past including the remains of the walls of the Fort Saint Sébastien, the training camp for the army of Louis XIV; and the Pavillon de la Muette, the hunting lodge used by Louis XV, Napoléon 1er and Napoléon III. Discover the abandoned railway that used to transport 150,000 people to the nearby hippodrome. Admire the Château de Maisons-Laffitte built by René de Longueil in the 17th century and the beautiful houses dotted around the park that were built for the Universal Exhibition in Paris.

I’m from Gothenburg in Sweden, but I’ve lived in France since 1986. Having worked in a wide range of sectors - ranging from language school director to travel agent manager – I decided to complete a training course to become an equestrian tourist guide. Dressage rider competition, I have been working in tourism for 30 years so I wanted to combine my passion and professional experience. I’m fascinated by Maisons-Laffitte and the surrounding region. I want to share this enthusiasm and show you beautiful and unexpected places, as well as the unique atmosphere at the Cité du Cheval. All our guides have an official equestrian guide or aide diploma. They are pleased to make you discover the wildlife and history of Maisons-Laffitte and the Forest of Saint Germain.

My horseback ride in the St. Germain forests was just marvelous. It was made so by Anna, the guide and consummate horsewoman. Her knowledge of both horse and history and life experience were superior but those were topped by her kindness. She surmised quickly that my years of horseriding and raising were definitely Western-style and she gently made suggestions in how to change my style to the European so that my horse could more easily get the cues it was used to. That made all the difference. Her running commentary was fascinating and enlightening. I highly recommend the company that employs her as well.

Anna was absolutely amazing. We had a wonderful experience riding. The horses were perfect. We were fascinated by the history she shared with us. We truly had a ride that we will never forget. We can’t wait to tell our friends and look forward to riding in Paris if we ever have a chance to come back. Thank you Anna for making our dream of riding in Paris memorable and fantastic. You are truly amazing. John thought the best part of the ride was when his wife, an experienced rider, was told by Anna to “turn the horse”. We had an awesome experience.
