- Joao's TEAM | about the guide
On a full day trip from Lisbon, experience the true flavor of the Portuguese countryside going to Setúbal, a fisherman’s village famous for hosting one of the world's ten best fish markets. The Setúbal region is also known for its delicious wines, liqueurs and cheeses. This tour will bring you in the best wineries, giving you a real taste of the local specialties and their traditions. You will start with Azeitão, a picturesque region famous for its cheese and wines, where you will visit the José Maria da Fonseca wine cellar, the oldest winery in Portugal where you will enjoy a public tour of the winery and its museum before a tasting of the finest wines including two reds, one white and two Moscatels (sweet wine). As you taste, learn about the different blends and characteristics of each sample. You will continue your wine tour, heading to Quinta do Alcube, where you will visit a more traditional family-run winery. There, you will learn the complex wine production methods and enjoy a tasting of six different wines especially chosen for you, including whites, reds and a special one... Then, you will make your way to the last winery, Lima Fortuna, where you will enter a private part of the cellar and get to know the history of the liqueur-making process. You will also tickle your taste buds with 4 different liquors, accompanied with an international award winning regional sheep milk cheese, several jams, some fresh bread, and local “chorizo”. To complete this rewarding day, you will travel to Arrábida National mountain range and its natural reserve. You will return to Lisbon on your private air-conditioned car.

A German born in Portugal, I was raised in England, Spain and Germany before coming back to Portugal, my adopted country. Working in finance for 20 years allowed me to visit most of Portugal, and decide I wanted to live out my passion: travel. Passionate about the road and eager for new experiences and encounters, I like to get lost in a new place and find my way by making new friends and getting to know their culture. As I wanted to share my excitement for travel and discovery of remote places, I started to organise some trips for my friends, family and colleagues, focusing on the important things in life. The decision of changing career came then naturally so I created a little travel company showing the wild and unseen parts of Portugal. With my customized tours and trips, I try to give another image of Portugal, a beautiful and tolerant country opened to languages, cultures and religions, but with a strong identity and history. With my fantastic team of tour guides, I organise and polish up quality tours in Portugal, which focus on nature and culture, always far from crowded touristic paths. During my tours, you will stimulate your senses learning local tips and lifestyles: seeing wildlife, catching wild fish, going to fresh markets, eating in traditional restaurants, making your own jam, enjoying tasting liqueur and learning about its 450 years old recipe, as well as many more exclusive experiences. PS : my tours could also be guided by Paulo or Rodrigo.

"I don't even know where to begin. I have been wine tasting in many countries and all over the US and this was by far the BEST one!! Joao was such a great guide. Not only was he very knowledgeable about wine, but he gave us a fantastic history lesson about Portugal. Definitely go to lunch. Joao takes you to this little local cafe and the fish was amazing!!! Thank you for the recommendation on which ones to choose they were perfect! At one of the wine stops we ran into Joao's colleague Paulo who was taking another tour around. He was just as fantastic and it was fun wine tasting and eating lunch with the other group. Thank you so much Joao for the amazing tour and the good chat there, sorry we fell asleep on the way back. We did stop for ice cream at the place you recommended and it was perfect after a day of shopping!! This is a 5 star tour and I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone going to Lisbon."
