Amsterdam, sustainable capital in Europe
Capital having brilliantly preserved its historical during the past centuries, the beautiful city of Amsterdam, however, it is also a model of modernity thanks to its ecological reach. Considered one of the “greenest” capitals of Europe, it continues today to set the example of a more ethical and responsible lifestyle.
The Amsterdam bicycles, symbols of the “green attitude”
It is not a coincidence if the bicycles are part of the Amsterdam landscape. With hundred kilometers of canals and 1500 bridges, the capital of the Netherlands has developed a lifestyle all its own over time. First used to travel easily in the city, bicycles have also become the guardians of the environment, widely favored by their inhabitants (even when it’s raining!) who enjoy their sustainable side to preserve the quality of the air and be more in harmony with nature.
The Amsterdam responsible initiatives in different sectors
The bike-related sustainabilityl reach has gradually spread throughout other local initiatives such as fashion boutiques, food, cosmetics, decoration, but also for example bamboo-made bikes manufactured in Ghana and respecting the values of responsible and fair trade.
The new green area of Amsterdam
Located in the north of Amsterdam, the district GWL- Terrein is a true ecological model built between 1996 and 1998 on the abandoned site of a former water treatment plant. If the bicycle is the main means of locomotion, it is because this urban project is the first car-free in Europe. On site, 600 homes were built with recycled and environmentally friendly materials. In this small world 100% green, everybody wears tee shirts made of certified organic cotton, shoes made of natural materials or recycled leather wheel, using organic products, paying attention to water and electricty consumption and of course, thoroughly sorting its waste for a minimum impact on the environment.
In order to follow the example, many hotels have also implemented a strict environmental policy for the protection and respect for the planet. A great way for travelers to develop an awareness of this ecological life.
