10 reasons to visit Amsterdam
Historical capital listed at the UNESCO world heritage, the beautiful city of Amsterdam is constantly reinventing itself. Whether summer or winter, there is always something to do. If the list of activities is endless, here are 10 compelling reasons to visit it!
1) To discover one of its unique places: the secret Begijnhof garden (hidden behind the Spui square), the secret Louvre Museum, the Red Light District and its extravagances, the sandwich bar The Butcher and its chic secret parties upstairs and many more…
2) To visit the Anne Frank House, a moving place that makes you travel back in time…To find out how this incredible Jewish girl lived for 2 years with 6 other people. And to never forget the horrors of the Second World War…
3) To do like the locals and explore the city by bike along the canals. In Amsterdam, this means of transport is unanimous for its practicality when passing from a small alley to another, but also for its ecological side which helps reducing pollution.
4) To discover its many markets. The most famous is the Albert Cuyp Market in the De Pjip neighborhood. Created more than a century ago, it is open 6 days a week and offers a large selection of products from food to clothing. Another popular one is the Floating Bloemenmarkt Flower Market.
5) To taste its delicious cheese. The Netherlands are really the land of cheese with many tasty varieties, many of them produced around Amsterdam (Gouda, Edam, Alkmaar, Woerden, Hoorn etc…).
6) To be lulled by the music omnipresent in the capital. Violin, guitar, piano… Street musicians are everywhere in Amsterdam! Another place to listen to music is the prestigious Concertgebouw which offers free concerts every Wednesday between noon and two.
7) To enjoy a delicious brunch. Amsterdam has an incredible plethora of cafes and restaurants offering original and creative dishes inspired by French, English and Australian culinary traditions.
8) To arouse your artistic curiosity strolling in the street Nieuwe Spiegelstraat where are lined up the most original galleries.
9) To visit one of its museums. Amsterdam is the European capital with the largest number of museums (see our article about it). Whether you are passionate about art and history (Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum…) or in search of something original (handbags Museum, Glasses Museum...), the Dutch capital has everything to satisfy you.
10) To discover the city from the water by renting a paddle boat or a small boat and navigate through its arteries on the Spui river.
