A half-day tour of the Château de Fontainebleau and its gardens

WITH
François | about the guide

This half-day tour plunges you into French history as you uncover stories about its kings, emperors and nobility. Situated 60km south-east of Paris, the château de Fontainebleau is a magnificent example of Renaissance and classical architecture. Home to French rulers from Francis I to Napoleon III, the palace is classified as a UNESCO world heritage site. During this private tour, your experienced guide will take you around the vast 115-hectare gardens, which were the ambitious project overseen by André Le Nôtre. Along the way, you will discover a delightful mix of ponds, fountains, caves and flowerbeds. The visit will then continue inside the palace including the Gallery of Francis I, the Boudoir of Marie Antoinette and the Room of the Guards. In addition to its exceptional architecture, the palace also holds impressive collections of French furniture and artworks dating the 6th to 19th century.

I’m from the northern French town of Douai, but I moved to Paris to finish my art history degree. I worked at the Musée National de la Renaissance and then for antique dealer Jacqueline Boccador before organizing contemporary art exhibitions with art dealer Marc Higonnet. I’ve been a qualified guide since 2011 and enjoy being able to mix my love of the humanities and good food. When I was young, my mother took me to the Musée de la Chartreuse de Douai for an archeology lecture, which I found incredibly beautiful (even if I didn’t understand everything)! Since then, I give lectures and guided tours in the hope of inspiring young – and not so young – people. Given my classical background, I’m particularly fond of the Louvre, the Jacquemart-André, Picasso et Middle Ages museums, as well as the châteaux of Chantilly, Fontainebleau and Chambord.
